Image of "Protest-Architecture": Barricades, Camps, spatial tactics 1830-2023 Protest movements shape public space not only through their messages, but in many cases also through their—mostly temporary—buildings. Frankfurt’s Deutsches Architekturmuseum DAM and Vienna’s MAK—Museum of Applied Arts are exploring this thesis in a joint exhibition project. The exhibition and the book coinciding with it explore the topic based on examples spanning from 1830 to 2022. Protest Architecture is the first-ever international survey of the architecture of protest and presents it in all its manifold forms and, in some cases, ambivalence. It is conceived as an encyclopedia with 176 entries, supplemented by 13 more expansive case studies. A preceding chronology portrays 68 protest movements and their architectural manifestations through concise texts and one image each, including examples from all over the world, such as the 1830 July Revolution in Paris, the 1848 March Revolution in Berlin, the 1911 Sugar Workers Strike in Queensland (Australia), the 1936–37 General Motors Sit-down Strike in Flint, MI (USA), the 1969–98 Troubles in Northern Ireland, Freetown Christiania in Copenhagen since 1971, the 1986 People Power Revolution in Manila, the 1999 WTO Protests in Seattle, WA (USA), the 2011 Arab Spring revolutions on Cairo’s Tahrir Square and Manama’s Pearl Roundabout, the 2013–14 Euromaidan uprisings in Kyiv, the 2015–16 #FeesMustFall student protests in Pretoria, the 2019 Acampamento Terra Livre in Brasilia, the 2020–21 Indian Farmers Protests, and the 2022 Freedom Convoy in Ottawa. Then, in 1980, a CHF 60 million loan was approved to renovate Zurich’s opera house: a bundle was to be forked out for “serious” bourgeois culture and zilch for the city’s youth. That was the last straw: On May 30, 1980, protestors held a demonstration in front of the opera house that turned into a street riot and eventually a city-wide protest movement spearheaded and fueled by autonomous groups. Over the course of the following weeks, the protests turned uglier, and so did the police’s aggressive attempts to quell the commotion. Zürcher Bewegung, Band 32 (Zurich Movement, Vol. 32), published by Verlag ohne Zukunft in 1981, is an illustrated timeline of the “Opera House Riots” that wreaked havoc in Zurich back in 1980. The book opens with the violent climax of the protests, the demo in front of the opera house, and closes on December 31 of that year with a stink bomb attack during the New Year's Eve performance of a play at Zurich’s Schauspielhaus. The book combines raw candid black-and-white photos with facsimiled news clippings of tabloid headlines as well as quotes from Swiss politicos and police officers, forming a sort of fragmentary running commentary on the documentary photographic material. Olivia Heussler, Malou Muralt, Dieter Oswald, Daniel Schäublin, Andi Zai et al. shot the pictures and edited the book. They wrote: "The book: not souvenirs to dull our own recollections, but raw photos of a battered city. Today, thanks to beautiful chaos, we’re in a state of emergency}." Now, to mark the 40th anniversary of the 1980 Opera House Riots, Edition Patrick Frey has taken up an idea floated by Fredy Meier to print a facsimile of this very first book about the Zürcher Bewegung. It’s available for the same price it sold for then: 12 Swiss francs.

Soziale Netzwerke oder eine Altersvorsorge gab es nicht. Arbeit «bis ins Grab» war für die grosse Mehrheit der Bevölkerung ein Muss. Die oftmals grosse materielle Not alter Menschen führte vor 100 Jahren zur Gründung der Stiftung «Für das Alter» – die heutige Pro Senectute. Der Autor Kurt Seifert erzählt leicht lesbar die Jahrhundertgeschichte der Entwicklung der schweizerischen sozialen Institutionen und führt uns vom Landesstreik über die AHV bis in die heutige Zeit, wo Langlebigkeit und Sicherung der Altersvorsorge im Vordergrund stehen und Pro Senectute sich für ein aktives, erfülltes Alter engagiert. Reich bebildert zeigt das Buch auf, wie dramatisch sich das Thema Altern in den letzten 100 Jahren gewandelt hat und welch grosse Rolle die Entwicklung tragfähiger sozialer Netze dabei spielte. Kurt Seifert war von 1999 bis 2016 für Pro Senectute Schweiz tätig, zuletzt im Bereich Grundlagenarbeit. Der Sozialwissenschaftler arbeitet heute als freier Publizist.

Viele Protestierende nutzten sie als individuelles Kommunikationsmittel, um ihre autoritäts- und konsumkritische Haltung zu transportieren. Die Flugblätter wurden zum zentralen Medium der Bewegung. Sie brachten das Lebensgefühl einer ganzen Generation zum Ausdruck – und schockierten etablierte Kräfte in Gesellschaft und Politik. Der Band vereint über 200 Flugblätter zu einer qualitativ wie quantitativ einmaligen Sammlung. Sie bietet Einblick in eine Zeit, die nicht nur an der Bruchstelle zum heutigen Zürich liegt, sondern aktuell bleibt, wird doch das Verhältnis zwischen Stadt und darin autonom agierenden Gruppierungen wieder intensiv verhandelt. «Autonomie auf A4» präsentiert die Flugblätter in Originalgrösse und chronologischer Abfolge. Verknüpft werden sie mit einem parallel verlaufenden Text, der die wichtigsten Ereignisse zusammenfasst. Dazu integriert der Band Schilderungen von Zeitzeugen sowie Fachtexte aus soziologischer und grafischkommunikativer Perspektive.

Image of "Ensemble Atelier WW Max Dudler": High-rises for Zurich: The Ensemble on Quadro Square Oerlikon, a district in the north of Zurich, marks the start of a linear city parallel to Zurich, which is in the process of becoming the most populous conurbation in Switzerland. This interface is also the location of the largest high-rise ensemble in Switzerland, which represents a radical feature of this new urban formation and was designed jointly by atelier ww and Max Dudler. The four high-rises surround a square and form an urban quad, which was intended to be the catalyst for the development of the surrounding district. “Finally there is a square again”, was how Raymond Hood described the Rockefeller Center in 1929, and both back then and now in this case it was about importing a very particular urban vision. The high-rise ensemble in Oerlikon is a consequential and emblematic group of buildings, a city within a city. This publication documents the complex design and planning history of this building complex through texts, photographs, plans, and sketches.

Image of "Femmes, Syndicats, Engagements": Quel est le point commun entre la condition des ouvrières à la fin du 19e siècle, les trajectoires féminines au sein du parti communiste, durant la première partie du 20e siècle, les stratégies des femmes migrantes dans le deuxième après-guerre ou encore l’égalité des chances à la SSR, au tournant du nouveau millénaire ? La réponse se trouve essentiellement dans les relations compliquées entre le mouvement ouvrier et les femmes. De tout temps, la construction masculine du mouvement ouvrier, les contradictions entre son discours à l’égard des droits et des libertés des femmes et ses pratiques ont été dénoncées par les mouvements féministes. Sur le plan de la recherche académique, la difficulté archivistique ainsi qu’une conjoncture historiographique peu favorable ont eu comme corollaire une marginalisation des travaux sur ce sujet. Toutefois, malgré ces obstacles, l’approche qui consiste à croiser les paradigmes «femmes» et «mouvement ouvrier» dans l’analyse des inégalités du monde professionnel suscite une attention croissante. Ceci, probablement en raison des fortes tensions que ce dernier a connu ces dernières décennies. Le rôle des syndicats est largement abordé par ce numéro sur les femmes et le mouvement ouvrier. Comment ont-ils intégré les questions de genre dans leurs luttes tout au long du 20e siècle ? De quelle façon ont-ils contribué à l’égalité entre les hommes et les femmes dans les conventions collectives de travail et dans les politiques du personnel ? Comment, dans la dernière décennie, ont-ils adhéré à une vision managériale du travail en soutenant les politiques de «diversity management» et en prônant l’intégration des femmes en tant qu’élément d’amélioration économique ? Les articles de ce numéro des Cahiers d’histoire du mouvement ouvrier offrent un éclairage historique à ces questions.

Clashes in public places between the establishment and the alternative scene were played out at levels of violence and readiness to use it that would be unimaginable today. Unlike 1968, the anarchic youth revolts in Zurich in 1980 were an avant-garde spectacle and made international headlines. The only tangible demand coming from the young people was that they wanted an Autonomous Youth Centre (AJZ), but in fact what they wanted was everything, now. Using this insistence on everything, deliberately slanted towards the absurd, with Dadaist wit and subversive camouflage, the movement unsettled representatives of all the established political forces, including many 68ers who were just starting to take over the institutions. The street battles in summer 1980 marked a shift towards open cultural politics in Zurich and to comprehensive development and marketing of urban youth culture. To a certain extent, the movement was event culture avant la lettre. Without it there would have been no street parade, and no party culture making an international impact. As a photographer, Olivia Heussler was both an activist and a contemporary witness. Her pictures show a summer whose scenes of violence and joyful happenings changed and made a lasting impact on many people’s lives. Image of "The dream of Solentiname": Spring 1984, Zurich-based photographer Olivia Heussler travelled to Nicaragua for the first time. She wanted to experience at first hand how the various political factions would turn the 1979 Sandinista revolution into a success story. During the civil war with the Contras, she lived in Managua and worked as a photographer, after a while also receiving assignments from the local press. Some of her pictures have become icons of the international press history. Olivia Heussler has succeeded in putting together an enormously impressive and multi-faceted portrait of Nicaragua covering almost 25 years. The book, marking the 30th anniversary of the revolution, presents her collection in its entirety for the first time. Her commitment to the people and her aspiration to provide an unembellished view of the war, its background and its aftermath are reflected in the diary-like texts that accompany the images. Martin Heller and Sergio Ramirez have contributed two exclusive texts with background information. After the overthrow of the dictatorship in 1979, Sergio Ramirez was one of five members of the ruling junta and subsequently served as Vice-President from 1984 to 1990. Image of "Kurdistan In the Shadow of History": Grouppublication Kurdistan was erased from world maps after World War I, when the victorious powers carved up the Middle East, leaving the Kurds without a homeland. Today the Kurds, who live on land that straddles the borders of Turkey, Iran, Iraq, and Syria, are by far the largest ethnic group in the world without a state. Renowned photographer Susan Meiselas entered northern Iraq after the 1991 Gulf War to record the effects of Saddam Hussein’s campaigns against Iraq’s Kurdish population. She joined Human Rights Watch in documenting the destruction of Kurdish villages (some of which Hussein had attacked with chemical weapons in 1988) and the uncovering of mass graves. Moved by her experiences there, Meiselas began work on a visual history of the Kurds. The result, Kurdistan: In the Shadow of History, gives form to the collective memory of the Kurds and creates from scattered fragments a vital national archive. In addition to Meiselas’s own photographs, Kurdistan presents images and accounts by colonial administrators, anthropologists, missionaries, soldiers, journalists, and others who have traveled to Kurdistan over the last century, and, not to forget, by Kurds themselves. The book’s pictures, personal memoirs, government reports, letters, advertisements, and mapsprovide multiple layers of representation, juxtaposing different orders of historiographical evidence and memories, thus allowing the reader to discover voices of the Kurds that contest Western notions of them. In its layering of narratives—both textual and photographic—Kurdistan breaks new ground, expanding our understanding of how images can be used as a medium for historical and cultural representation. A crucial repository of memory for the Kurdish community both in exile and at home, this new edition appears at a time when the world’s attention has once again been drawn to the lands of this little-understood but historically consequential people.

This booklet is a collection of analyses and reflections by women who have worked with the Women's Secretariat of the Nicaraguan Association of Rural Workers (ATC) at the different stages of conception and implementation. "Ending the Myth of the Weaker Sex" (Ana Criquillon) provides the history of the women's program within the ATC. It identifies the need to incorporate women into agricultural jobs. Next, the article describes the three-stage project undertaken in 1983: a preliminary diagnosis that showed division of labor according to gender as the main obstacle confronting women; training of promoters through the organization of grassroots women's workshops; and a phase of action research. The article discusses the union's adoption of the resolutions that set forth women's demands and incorporation of the demands in collective agreements. "Linking Production and Reproduction: Popular Education in Action," based on an interview with Clara Murguialday, describes the publication, "Vamos," developed for use in workshops on work norms or standards. These sections of "Vamos" are highlighted: understanding work norms; defining problems; and searching for solutions. Photographs and text from the publication are provided. "Reflecting on the Process," based on an interview with Heliette Ehlers, addresses challenges facing the women's movement, lessons learned on how to organize women, and success in changing men's consciousness.
