Image of "Gaza Strip, Palestine.": Shortly after the Oslo Peace Accords in 1993 till 2003, I took photographs in the Palestinian refugee camps of Jabalia, Khan Yunis and Deir al Balah in the Gaza Strip and portrayed young settlers attending religious classes in Newe Dekalim. The contrasts could not be greater: while everyday life on the Palestinian side was extremely difficult and painful, young occupying soldiers and settlers from Israel presented themselves proudly and confidently in front of their Jewish settlement in Gush Katif. This settlement was finally cleared and demolished in 2005.

Image of "«Mit zwölf wusste ich, dass sich Afghanistan verändern muss»": »Es gibt drei Punkte, die gegen mich sprechen: Ich bin eine Frau, ich spreche für Frauen und ich bin eine Hazara – die am meisten verfolgte ethnische Gruppe in Afghanistan.« Sima Samar Die Geschichte der Afghanin Sima Samar ist bewegend. Ihr Ehemann wurde 1979 während der Präsidentschaft von Nur Muhammad Taraki verhaftet, er blieb verschollen. Sie selbst floh nach Pakistan, wo sie in der Grenzstadt Quetta ein Frauen- und Kinderspital aufbaute. 1989 gründete Sima Samar die Organisation Shuhada, die sich der nachhaltigen Entwicklung von Frauen- und Menschenrechten, der medizinischen Versorgung der Bevölkerung sowie der Einrichtung von Schulen in Pakistan und Afghanistan widmet. Als die Taliban die Schließung ihrer Mädchenschulen forderten und sie mit dem Tod bedrohten, falls sie nicht gehorche, lautete ihre Antwort: »Geht ruhig hin und hängt mich öffentlich und erzählt den Menschen, welches Verbrechen ich begangen habe: kleinen Mädchen Papier und Bleistift zu geben.«
