Wie geplant sind am Mittwoch die letzten Meter Fels im Gotthard-Basistunnel durchstossen worden. damit ist auch die Westroehre zwischen Erstfeld und Bodio auf der gesamten Laenge von 57 Kilometern ausgebrochen. am Mittwoch, dem 23. März 2011, starteten die Mineure am längsten Eisenbahntunnel der Welt ein letztes Mal die Herrenknecht-Tunnelbohrmaschine »Heidi« (Gripper-TBM, Durchmesser 9,43 m). Nach insgesamt 25,2 km fiel um 12:20 Uhr die Felswand beim Durchbruch. Damit ist der Weg durch die Alpen durchgängig frei.
